Dear Alpine Parrot Community,
Like many of you, I am gutted by the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This ruling is a step backwards from the world we want to live in, and will take decades to fix.
And yet, I’m not surprised. The United States has always been a place of safety for a select few, and many of us have never truly felt like we were granted the full citizenship promised to us by the Constitution.
Those of us with underrepresented identities (women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and more) have long known that we have to fight for the same rights as the original founders of this country. We constantly strive to create a safer environment for ourselves and our loved ones, and we will continue to do that work until we can live in joy 100% of the time.
Alpine Parrot’s mission is to create apparel that celebrates and encourages underrepresented people in the outdoors. That mission may be specific to people of size and people of color, but let’s be clear: when life is better for the most vulnerable in our society, life gets better for everyone. We lead with love, not hate. We push for equity so that we can achieve true equality.
We also believe that actions speak louder than words: I write this knowing it will be available for others to read, but as soon as I’m done I’ll be continuing the work to provide adventurers with the apparel they need to get outside safely and comfortably. Taking up space outside allows us to find the space inside ourselves to tackle things that are bigger than us as individuals.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: your body is perfect, just the way it is, right now. How you choose to move in the world, take up space, and use your body is up to no one else but you.
I encourage you to take the time you need to process this setback and find avenues through it. I believe it can and will get better, especially if we work together 💖
Hugs,
Raquel
